I have completed Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and then by virtue of my parents wish I pursued BE Production Engineering. I joined SKF as my first job and then worked for Rollon Hydraulics. I worked as an employee for 13 years and then ventured in my business in 2002.
While I was working in SKF, I came across with many successful diploma holders who eventually reached top position of managerial ladder. I grew up in SKF seeing these diploma technocrats managing whole company. I carried that impression in my mind while starting my company Ultra Precision Spindles.
I hired most of the diploma holders in my company, rather all of them. The company was employing all diploma holders those days, except me.
I was always happy with this set of people. I was also carrying preconceived notion that degree holders work for few years only to leave the company for extra bucks. This possibility is always there.
A year back, when we needed to hire engineers, our ad appeared news paper asking diploma holders to apply for the positions. Though few degree holders applied and I interviewed them. I found their maturity level much higher compared to diploma holders I talked. Eventually I hired degree holders as against my usual practice.
After working with these new set of engineers I found them to be much matured, their grasping power is better and they work with certain thought process which is in line with organisational requirements. In short, I found that intelligence quotient of our company is better today than a year back.
It is always said that attitude matters, education does not for one to succeed. I realised that this could be true in case of entrepreneur but not in case of employees. Education certainly makes difference. I think what is required is to assess personality test while recruiting people. And we should get rid of preconceived notion that highly educated people do not work for long. Even if they do not work for longer tenure, we should continue to hire them.
I have concluded that possibility of stabilising business is more when you hire more and more higher education people.
(There is a possibility that less educated people might feel offended. But remember, thoughts are related to employees and not employer. On the contrary, many rich and famous businessmen are drop outs of schools)
