"Disruptive Innovation"

I am going to be part of one discussion and in that context I came across term "Disruptive Innovation". When I google this term, I came across interesting personality Mr Clayton Christensen who is management expert at Howard. He is father of this terminology "Disruptive Innovation". Indeed, its a different wording. Innovation, which is disruptive, Mr Christensen's many lectures on the subject are available on You Tube and its a pleasure to listen to this gentleman who looks to be quite humble in nature.

Disruptive innovation leads to creating new market. And if you are not ready to accept it, it is very likely that you are swept away with all together new technology or loose leadership position. A journey from Mainframe computer to smartphone is perfect example of disruptive innovation. And as we all know there have been many companies who closed down as they could not anticipate changes happening around. Even company like Nokia had a big set back in the process and Blackberry has become part of history.

The beautiful part of disruptive innovation is that it allows outcome of it for the masses. The products which are otherwise only few can afford, are made available to middle class or lower middle class people of society. It boosts nation's economy.

I think No frill airline is one such disruptive innovation. You can see what happened to Kingfisher who could not take this form to grow their business. Had Etihad not been come to rescue, even Jet would have nose dived. Middle class people started dreaming of car in 1983 with disruptive innovation that Maruti brought and off late it is further extended by Tata Nano. Fiat and Ambassador who pretended to sleep are now nothing but monuments in Museum.

I was co relating this to recent talk of Tesla who has innovated electric car called T3. American society is well aware of Global warming and future fuel crisis. Tesla management has picked up same thread and launching this electric car. I am sure they must have worked very hard on charging time and charging stations and all other aspects of automobile engineering. Americans loved the tagline Sustainable growth and literally jumped to book by staying whole night in tents. It is said that close to 300000 vehicles are already booked in two days. The whole saga is compared only to Ford when they introduced its famous model T in 1910, another example of disruptive innovation. An electric car, a technology which was not in radius of common man thinking is brought to their door step by Tesla through these magical word Disruptive Innovation. While Tesla is working hard to launch, only GM of big three have worked in parallel and launched Bolt. It would be interesting to see their competition.

In fact electric car is not new concept for India. Maini Motors, which is now taken over by Mahindra has launched Reva fifteen years back. For some unknown reasons, it was never success to boast about. It is very likely that Tesla would come to India and we will for sure awestruck by its success only to say that "Oh! nothing great about it. We had this technology 20 years back". We are otherwise very good in patting own back with achievements which are part of history.
